| The Gwinnett
Historical Society (GHS): Compiled a listing of all burials within the County, identifying almost 40,000 individual graves in 407 cemeteries. These locations have been submitted to the Development Department for plotting on County maps so that developers may be advised if a cemetery is included on property to be rezoned. GHS has provided a copy of our book Gwinnett County, Georgia, Deaths 1818-1989, to the Development Department, for their use as a reference. Cemetery Committee Chair, Rick Lux, reviews, researches and reports to Development Department on requests for rezoning involving a cemetery, and requests for moving cemeteries. Located pioneer, church, slave, Native American and community cemeteries, plotting their locations on our County map. We are endeavoring to preserve these sites. GHS maintains a comprehensive filing system of all burials/cemeteries for the public to use. Also, GHS provides archaeological assistance in location of cemeteries and grave sites. Manages and continues the restoration/development of the Elisha Winn Historic Site. Helped negotiate a 16+ acre buffer/expansion area for the preservation of the Elisha Winn Historic site, for the benefit of Gwinnett citizens, and use as an interpretive park. Secured protection for the Native American burials and Rock Mounds at the Elisha Winn Historic site. Organizes the annual Elisha Winn Fair a festival attracting 3000 people, annually. Provides group tours of the Elisha Winn House, Walnut Grove School, on a scheduled basis. Presents special event Annual Gala in June. Made approximately $125,000 in repairs, improvements to the Elisha Winn House c. 1812, used as the first courthouse in 1818. Also, moved and restored the Walnut Grove Schoolhouse c. 1875, and Old Lawrenceville Jail c. 1865. Currently, a log house is awaiting to be relocated to a permanent location on the property. Re-roofed all structures in 2001 and reconstructed the Clack Blacksmith Shop on the site in 2001. Provides technical assistance for National Register nominations. Swann's Mill, recently added to the national register has been purchased by Gwinnett Co. and added to it's inventory of green space land.
Publishes and sells books of historic
interest, including: Developed 2 slide shows, one showing scenes from our book Vanishing Gwinnett, the other relating to the historic preservation efforts of GHS. The latter one, is located in all middle and high school libraries for use by teachers. Maintains an office staffed by volunteers, five days a week, from 9:30 to 1:30. Volunteers assist visitors with their research. Maintains local historic library. Maintains family and ancestor files. Maintains an archives room which contains the original Court, Deed, and other ledgers, formerly housed in the Gwinnett County Courthouse. Presents educational programs regarding topics of local interest. Conducts genealogical workshops. Produces a quarterly newsletter, "The Heritage", to 500 dues paying members, plus 100, who are interested in local history, historic preservation and genealogy. Produces/distributes brochures of historical interest through our office, and the Chamber of Commerce. Offers information on the History of Gwinnett, at local festivals, including the Genealogical Festival, The Gwinnett Family Festival, and the Gwinnett County Fair. Erected two Historic Markers. Provides individual assistance to school children and teachers, developing reports on the history of Gwinnett and/or cities. Most of this is done at no charge for copies and postage. |
