The Old Lawrenceville Cemetery, between U.S. 29 and East Pike Street,
Lawrenceville, Georgia NEEDS HELP! It has stood through old age (since
1819), acid rain, neglect, overgrowth, vandalism, winds, rains and even tornadoes.
More than half of the markers are on the ground, broken, collapsed, or unreadable. The Gwinnett Historical Society heads an effort
to return this pioneer cemetery to it's former dignity and place of honor for many of
Gwinnett's founders. So far, nearly 700 hours of volunteer work has been performed there
in the last few months. More help is needed in probing, under an archeologist's direction,
and trimming, mowing and cleaning.
Some jobs require professional
work (resetting toppled and broken stones, lifting up markers so that roots can be killed
and removed, cutting new inscriptions, etc.) For those and for supplies for cleaning and
weed-removal, a fund has been set up. The Gwinnett Historical Society's Lawrenceville
Cemetery Fund has been set up at the Brand Bank, corner of Crogan and Clayton Streets,
Lawrenceville. Donations are deductible under 501©(3). Volunteer labor is always needed.
To participate, call the Historical Society at 770-822-5174 for more information or click here for a
sign up page that you can print and mail.
